Rae Award ~ 12 June 2009
On the evening of Friday 12 June 09 some 55 scouts descended on Blandford Scouts HQ eager to take part in the 2009 RAE Award.
The RAE Award is our District Scouts Camping Competition where Patrols put into practice all their Scouting skills in an endeavour to be the best Patrol.
This year we had 10 Patrols competing and every troop in the District was represented.
A team of Leaders marked the Patrols on every aspect of Patrol Camping including site layout, putting up tents, cooking, food and equipment storage, teamwork and Patrol Leaders abilities.
10 activity bases were run over the 2 days, where again the patrols were marked on their abilities. The bases this year were soap carving, mapping, compass, quiz, fire lighting, axe and bow saw skills, knotting, first aid, mini pioneering and a timed hike tent pitching.
Saturday evening the Scouts entertained the Leaders with a variety of campfire songs, sketches and stunts. Yes, they were marked on these as well.
Sunday afternoon and all the kit was packed up ready for final inspection, then the wait whilst the points were added up.
Jenny, our DC, arrived to make the presentation to the winning team and congratulate the other patrols on their achievement.

Medieval Camp 22 to 25 May 09 (Review)
Comments were requested from Leaders and their Scouts so that the core team from County could have feed back at the wash up meeting on the 10 June 09.
JK went around the table of all those present that attended the camp, comments as follows: -
Positive ~
Activities brilliant, Scouts enjoyed the whole weekend, fantastic camp, Scouts were enjoying the activities, great not to have to cook, food excellent, brilliant camp, Med factor brilliant, first class camp, thanks to all the core team and sub camp leaders, when is the next one?
Negative ~
Tuck shop, rethink times, open far too long, Scouts not eating food provided spending money in tuck shop instead. Archery to few leaders on the line (where were the rest of County Leaders with archery permits?) Saturday run by North Dorset Leaders only. Some went hungry (Explorer’s) last called in not enough food left so very small portions. Sunday banquet needs rethinking, those who waited for an hour to be fed ended up with small, cold portions. Need drink stations at each activity base. Allow a morning and afternoon break for drink and snack. Vegetarian meals need to be available, not as an option but an alternative. Did not know that you had to ask for vegetarian option. Alternative activities needed at bases where Scouts had to wait (Water activity where only half could get on the water) Car parking/dropping off needs to be addressed, do not rely on Leaders who have Scouts arriving to direct traffic, no high vis jackets or radio’s. Needs separate team.
Overall Comment ~
Fantastic camp, congratulations to everyone involved in the organisation.

Five a side football 18 April 09
The overall feeling was that this had been a successful event and will be programmed in for 2010. Next year there will be medals for the runners up.
There was some discussion regarding directions to the event site. This came about as some, unidentified, parents had complained. Simon and Mike stated that the grid reference was on all the paperwork, and that it was section Leaders responsibility to provide maps if needed. JK stated that he had produced a Google map, which was attached to the one-day activity form handed out to both Blandford and Sturminster Scouts and Cubs.
Medieval Camp 22 to 25 May 09
The following information was handed out and explained.
Buddens site map showing locations of sub camps, activity zones, catering tent.

JK will forward additional information as it is received.

Trig Tower Tor Competition 2009
21st Feb. 2009
On Saturday 21 February 09 some 50 Scouts and around 30 Leaders, Young leaders, Parents and Friends gathered at Blandford Scout HQ for the 2009 Trig Tower Tor competition.
This year’s competition was organised by Simon Young and his team, around the downs and forests west of Blandford.
The Scouts formed into 11 teams, 2 from Blandford, 3 from Charlton Marshall, 2 from Shaftesbury, 2 from Stalbridge and 2 from Sturminster Newton. Each team was allocated at least 2 Leaders to accompany them around their route.
The Scout teams had to plan their own routes, based on grid references, and navigate that route to collect points from clues given to them on the route card. The more grid references visited the more points were collected.
Everyone who took part enjoyed a glorious sunny days hiking, thankfully for me, the team that I accompanied had not included too many steep hills in their route planning.
The winning team, this year, was Stalbridge “B” made up of Ryan, Tom, Madie and Carey who accumulated some 1,510 points. They were closely followed in second place, with a difference of 40 points, by Charlton Marshall “C”, made up by Emma, Ben, Jack, Lewis and Ben, who were last years winners.
The competition was followed by a fish and chip supper, a sleepover at Blandford HQ and bacon rolls for breakfast.
My thanks to all the Scouts who took part and to the Leaders who supported this annual event.

Some 48 Scouts attended the party from Blandford, Charlton Marshall, Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Stalbridge and Sturminster Newton. All had a great time. My thanks to those leaders who organised this event.
Trig Tower Tor 21 Feb 09
This year’s event will take place at Blandford. Details have already been e-mailed to Troop Leaders. Leaders are to ensure that a parent signs the One Day Activity form and if the Scout is staying for the sleepover, permission to camp form must also be signed.
It is imperative that each Troop provides a Leader to walk with each Team that is entered, i.e; one team: one leader to walk, two teams: two leaders to walk.
Each team entering will require an OS map 117, a compass, personal kit and food/drink for the competition.
There will be a sleepover at Blandford HQ for those who wish to stay. The cost will be £5 per head to cover a Fish and Chip supper and breakfast roll.
Clive and Graham have offered help so that we can get maximum safety cover.
JK to complete NAN and send to Jenny.
Five a side football 18 April 09
Details have been e-mailed to all Troop Leaders, ADC Beavers, ADC Cubs DESC and District for maximum section coverage.
There will be a charge of £1 a head for each player to cover costs of trophies and medals, which will be given to WINNERS only.

County and District Events
County Medieval Camp 23/25 May. Registration for this event must be sent in asap. Discussion took place with regards to County’s proposal to split up Districts. Whilst this was accepted as a good idea, some Troops felt that this would cause difficulties where Troops share equipment and tentage. Two suggestions were tabled; either: those Troops who share resources register as one Troop or: the District registers as one Troop so that minimum kit is required. Troop Leaders to discuss and inform ADC of decision.
Rea Award.
This is to be held at Blandford 13/14 June 09. JK to speak to Joker and enquire if he is willing to manage scoring and data collection or pass over computerised information.

[ note from RM - as per POR Shooting is NOT an activity that requires an activity permit, but correct qualification must be held. For advice call Rog. on 01747 822202 ]
JK asked all Troop Leaders to collect photocopies of all Leaders First Aid certificates and send to Hugh so that the database can be updated.
It was agreed that as the Scout section use these for the Trig Tower Tor, a donation of £20 was made towards the radio licence fee.
